After RHCS I headed to Ohio to Mount Union College where I earned my degree in Education. The college years were wonderful and tumultuous – I know you all remember the late 60’s. While there I met Brian Dorr, and we were married in 1970. That figures out to 36 years this summer- wow! Brian earned his degree in music education and then served in the US Army Band. While he was in the Army we lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and Fulda, Germany. During that time I taught in the greater Atlanta area and then in the military school on post in Germany.
When Brian left the Army we came back to NE Ohio. We live in Madison, east of Cleveland along Lake Erie. We settled into a busy schedule with Brian teaching high school music and me teaching elementary school in nearby Perry. Brian now teaches music, pre- K to 8th grade at Phillips-Osborn School, a private school in Painesville.
We have three children who have brought such joy to our life. Meredith (29) has a BA degree in Arts Management from Baldwin Wallace College. She and her husband Terry live on the west side of Cleveland now, after living in Florida for three years. Meredith is an office manager and Terry is a pilot for PSA Airways, part of US Air. For those of you who know my mother, Meredith is so much like her -- thoughtful, kind, and capable. Our son, Kevin (25), has brought us both joys and challenges over the years. Kevin is developmentally disabled. He is loving, kind, and so happy, but will always think and behave as a child. He is so dear. Our youngest, Ashley (21), will be a 5th year senior at Baldwin Wallace College in the fall. She started out as a Math major, and the change to Art Education has added another year to her schedule. She is funny, kind, and full of energy. When comparing photos of Ashley with some of my mom at the same age, it is hard to tell which one is which.
When the children were young I stopped teaching to stay home with them. I got my “kid fix” during those years by spending 20 years working with Girl Scouts, from troop leader to community director, to Council trainer. I retired from Girl Scout volunteering last year. My real job is working for the Lake County Board of Mental Retardation. I work at my son’s former school as a substitute this year, though I have been a full time one-to-one aide previously. I love my job and the children I work with. In Madison, I work with our community theater. I have been theater chairperson for the last two years, and on the board of the community arts organization.
It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since we left RHCS. I know that if there had been cell phones and email when we left high school, I would have stayed in much better touch with friends from Middleport! I am looking forward to seeing many of you this summer.
