After Roy-Hart, I went to the University of Rochester (BA 1970) and then to George Washington University Law School (1973). After getting out of law school, I worked for the “feds” (the Securities and Exchange Commission) for 8 years, until 1981. In 1981, I got married to Maryjane Burns, who originally came from the Boston area and was also working at the SEC. Shortly after getting married, we packed up and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where I joined American Electric Power’s legal staff. We returned to Washington in the mid-80s, moved two more times (to the New York area and then to Atlanta), and finally returned for good to the Washington area (Great Falls, VA) in 1997. For the past nine years, I have been associated with the firm of Thelen Reid & Priest, where I practice “energy law,” for lack of a better description, representing utilities, independent power producers, etc. Very boring.
Maryjane and I have two daughters: Wallis, 23, a University of Virginia grad who started working last summer with Deloitte & Touche, and Lindsay, 21, who is a junior at the University of Virginia, majoring in systems engineering. Maryjane has an administrative job with the University of Virginia. We are hoping to sell our home in Great Falls this year and start building our retirement home in Charlottesville. I’m looking forward to retirement, although I’m not exactly sure when that will happen, and I’m still trying to come up with an idea for my second career. The only requirement is that it can’t involve sitting at a desk.
Over the years I have gone back to Middleport frequently to visit family, so I’ve never completely lost touch. It will be fun to visit with everyone in July. See you then.
